Channel 4 holds on to BB for £180 million

Channel 4 has paid a reported £180 million for the rights to show Endemol UK's Big Brother for the next three years.

The broadcaster is said to have been forced to reach an agreement with the production company, after ITV expressed an interest in the format.

Seven seasons of the series have been shown in the UK since it began in 2000. The finale of the Big Brother 7 this summer was watched by up to 8.2 million viewers.

The commission includes spin-off programmes Celebrity Big Brother, Big Brother's Little Brother, Big Brother's Big Mouth and E4 streaming.

Channel 4 commissioning editor, Angela Jain, told BBC.co.uk: "Channel 4 is the spiritual home of Big Brother."

"It remains the ultimate reality format and continues to deliver dramatic, innovative viewing as one of the UK's most talked about television programmes."
