Mammoth brings Cathy home to ITV

ITV has commissioned independent Mammoth Screen to re-make Emily Bronte's classic Wuthering Heights, in a continued move towards period dramas.

ITV already has three Jane Austen novels planned for next year - Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

The three-hour Bronte production, as yet uncast, has been written by Blackpool writer Peter Bowker, and was commissioned by ITV's controller of drama, Laura Mackie.

Mackie said: “Wuthering Heights is one of the most haunting and passionate novels in English literature, and Heathcliffe and Cathy are two of the most memorable characters of all time. We’re sure that Peter’s fresh approach to the adaptation will delight the ITV1 audience.”

Former ITV drama producer Damien Timmer will produce the adaptation for Mammoth Screen, which is expected to be broadcast in early 2008.

The last UK television version of Wuthering Heights was produced in 1998 by LWT and starred Sarah Smart and Robert Cavanah.
